Chronology of Biblical Events

Wall-Chart

by Randall S. Frederick

When I read the entire (Christian) Bible for the first time, I did it backwards. I started with Revelation and read each book until I finished with Genesis. For years, since I was a child, I had tried to read it forward – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and so on. I always enjoyed Genesis. I suppose that is the storyteller in me – watching the narrative of this family through generation after generation, making the same mistakes. It’s operatic in a way, the tragedy of human experience. But then I would read Exodus, which was very different in tone, and have to “go back” to Leviticus. And then again in Numbers. Again in Deuteronomy. Finally, the story would move forward again in Joshua. Judges. But it kept scrambling after this, the epic of scripture leaping forward and backward across time. Was Isaiah the first prophet? No, wait, why are we talking about the nation of Judah again – weren’t they conquered already? Hold up. Now we’re going backwards again?

When I finally read the Bible all the way through for the first time, it had been over a decade since my last attempt. It was too jumbled and confusing – not the story itself, but the chronology. Where in time was the reader supposed to locate themselves? So I said “screw it” and did what I usually do (at least now that I am an adult) – I embraced the confusion and plowed through. Once I set aside my need for “proper”chronology, I was still able to pick up themes and echoes – but I began to notice more than I ever had before why Christianity is so confusing and disjointed at times. One preacher says God wants to kill everybody. Another says God wants to love everybody. One says women are “equal” to males, that women are “co-inheritors of the promises of God,” while another says “women should be silent in church” and “submit,” while still another emphasizes that these ideas about women presuppose marriage – so what about unmarried women? Are women equal to men if they never marry?

As a professor of literature now that I am becoming older, it makes sense. If you tell a story by jumping around in the events, your audience will get all kinds of different and non-linear ideas. That’s a very human response, but it is also a very human way of telling a story. If you tell you best friend (who knows you pretty well) about a recent experience you had, they are able to follow along even if you say you kissed someone goodnight before the appetizers arrived. But even here, with someone who knows you very well, they may still stop you occasionally to clarify the timeline you are using to construct your story. How long were you in the bathroom – a few seconds, or a few minutes? You said you didn’t like his shoes – oh wait, you didn’t say that to him, you just thought it. Okay. Now I understand.

The Bible is not arranged in chronological order because it is divided by the type of literature it includes. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the order include the Books of Moses (Genesis to Deuteronomy), the Books of History (Joshua to 2 Chronicles), the Wisdom Books (Job to Song of Songs), and the Prophets (Isaiah to Malachi). In the Christian Scriptures, the 27 books include four Gospels (Matthew to John), one book of history (Acts), the Epistles or letters of the apostles in circulation among the Early Church (Romans to Jude) and one book of prophecy (Revelation).

While the period of the Hebrew Scriptures ended approximately 400 years prior the time of the Christian Scriptures, the books within each collection occurred at a variety of times. In the Hebrew Scriptures, for example, the events of Ezra and Nehemiah took place (chronologically) later than a reader would anticipate, near the “end” of events in Hebrew canon. Yet these books are listed before Job, the events of which took place long before those in Ezra and Nehemiah. I tell students of the Bible that if they read “all the way through” and it makes sense, they probably didn’t read it very well since, again, the books are grouped together based on genre instead of order of events. The fact that the Bible is not presented in chronological order sometimes makes it difficult to study. Many publishers now offer a Chronological Bible that arranges the Bible’s books in order. This is one way in which readers can better understand the historical flow of what took place in the history of the Bible, though many express that this also feels disjointed since these Bibles break mid-narrative to new genres.

Here, it may be helpful to have a timeline for the reading of scripture. You are, after all, trying to piece together hundreds of events told by several authors over centuries. As a historical collection, the Bible needs a little help to contextualize the writings of the prophets – whose harshness may seem surprising and without provocation. Read collectively with an appropriate context and some measure of dating, a reader begins to understand a great deal more of why God gets angry – especially since the issues God takes with the People of Israel reappear time and again. The four biographies of Jesus in the Gospels seem to differ, and we might understand those differences in light of events taking place when each biography was written. Still, it is difficult for even experienced historians to precisely date some of the events of ancient history. Two timelines are presented here for your convenience, more or less providing a range in which Biblical events took place.
